Hernia

Hernia
A hernia is weakness or tear in the abdominal muscles which allows fatty tissue or and organ such as the intestines to protrude through the weak area. If the bulge flattens out when you lie or push against it, you have to reducible hernia. You are not in immediate danger, but the hernia should be evaluated by a physician. If the tissue protruding through the hernia is stuck and never flattens out, you have a non reducible hernia. This is often painful and prompt medical attention is required.
Three-dimensional Mesh Repair: A device(Prolene Hernia System) has been designed to overcome many of the disadvantages of tension free hernia repair technique which is currently used primarily to repair direct and indirect inguinal hernia.
This Consist of three attached components:
1) An 'underlay patch' that provides for an effective posterior repair on the inside of the abdominal wall giving the benefits of laproscopic repair.
2) A 'connector' similar to plug, but smaller and flatter.
3) An 'onlay patch' that fits over the abdominal wall giving the benefits of open mesh repair.
1) As the device lies flat against the abdomen, it has virtually no chance of migrating like other devices.
2) Usually, a minimal number of stitches are needed to secure the device, reducing discomfort and the chance the nerve damage.
3) Most important the 3-D mesh device provides the benefits of strong posterior repair like a laproscopic procedure.
4) Discharge within 24 hours and back to work from 3rd day after surgery.
After Care For 3D Mesh Repair Usually the hospital stay for hernia is 24 hours and the patient gets discharged within 24 hours post surgery. Post surgery there are a few things that the patient needs to keep in mind that needs to be taken care of after going home.
  • Do not pick up heavy weights immediately post surgery.
  • Do not undergo vigorous exercise regime atleast for a month.
  • Avoid coughing too often.
  • Avoid straining while urination
  • Try to maintain normal required weight as too much weight can give pressure on the abdomen region.
The patient can have a normal full diet post surgery. Only a follow up post surgery is required for removal of stitches.
