Constipation occurs when bowel movements are difficult or occur less frequently than usual. The average time between bowels' motions varies from one person to another person. Some people consume them up to three times per day. Others only get them once or twice a week.
It most commonly occurs as a result of dietary or routine changes, or an insufficient fiber intake. If you have significant pain, blood in your stools, or constipation that lasts longer than three weeks, you need to see a doctor.
Constipation occurs when your colon absorbs too much water from waste (stool/poop), leading the stool to dry out and become difficult to push out of your body.
To give you a little background, nutrients are absorbed as food passes through the digestive tract. The partially digested food (waste) passes from the small intestine to the large intestine, commonly known as the colon. The colon collects water from this waste, producing a solid mass known as stool. If you have constipation, food may travel too slowly through the digestive tract. This provides the colon with too much time to absorb water from waste. The stool becomes dry, hard, and difficult to push out.
