The pilonidal sinus, or aperture, is a small skin tunnel or opening located at the top of the buttocks where they part. It may not always exhibit symptoms, and once infection occurs, treatment becomes necessary.
Identification of a pilonidal sinus usually occurs when symptoms manifest and infection sets in. Infection can lead to pain, swelling, and the formation of a pus-filled abscess.
In the absence of any signs of infection, treatment is not required, and the recommended approach is to "observe and wait." It is crucial to regularly shower or bathe to keep the area between your buttocks clean. Refrain from shaving the affected area unless advised by your doctor.
