Pilonidal sinuses are abnormal openings just under the skin that appears when hair grows into it. It's also generally known as "the valley of pain" or "gluteal cleft cyst." Pilonidal sinuses are a type of swelling on the skin caused by infection and inflammation. They develop when hair follicles become blocked with debris, leading to inflammation and collections of pus that drains out under the skin's surface. Pilonidal cysts in males are called inguinal (meaning under the groin) pilonidal cysts; in females, they are known as inguinal pilonidal cysts.
Most pilonidal cysts are brought on by loose hairs that pierce the skin. Hair can be forced into the skin by friction and pressure from rubbing, tight clothing, cycling, or extended periods of sitting.
