Pilonidal sinus is a condition where fluid accumulates under the skin of the buttocks. This can lead to inflammation and pain of anus area, along with itchiness. The reason this condition occurs is because of a small hair-like sac called an apocrine gland located in the pilonidal region. As people grow older and hair follicles disappear, these glands start to release enzymes which combine with dead skin cells and oil deposits formed in your skin pores. This makes it stick together in the pore causing blockage that leads to an abscess forming under the skin.
If there are no indications of infection, treatment is not necessary. The "observe and wait" strategy will be recommended. It's essential to periodically shower or bathe if you want to maintain the space between your buttocks clean. If your doctor doesn't recommend it, don't shave the afflicted region.
A painful condition known as a pilonidal sinus infection can be brought on by a bacterial infection in a hair follicle or a sweat gland at the base of the spine. Antibiotics, surgery, and abscess drainage are just a few of the different ways that pilonidal sinus infections can be treated. Antibiotics are used to get rid of the pathogens causing the infection. They can be taken orally or given intravenously. Surgery can be used to remove any abscesses that may be present, as well as any neighbouring contaminated tissue.
Most pilonidal cysts are brought on by loose hairs that pierce the skin. Hair can be forced into the skin by friction and pressure from rubbing, tight clothing, cycling, or extended periods of sitting. To try to force the hair out, the body forms a cyst around it. On the tailbone, pilonidal cysts typically develop.

Pilonidal sinuses are not a severe medical issue before they become infected. Pilonidal sinus infections necessitate medical attention.
Although swelling and fluid leaking may be momentarily stopped, the symptoms usually return soon after. Pilonidal sinus infections frequently do not go away by themselves.
A painful, sensitive, swollen, and red area will form on the top of your buttocks. When you sit down, the pain may increase because the cyst may begin to flow pus. Additionally coated in hair is the pilonidal sinus.
The discomfort felt after pilonidal sinus surgery is typically less than after other procedures, such as those used to cure fistulas and fissures. The local anaesthetic used during the treatment will prevent you from experiencing any pain during or after it.
