What is a pilonidal sinus?

The top of the buttocks, where they separate, has a small hole or tunnel in the skin called a pilonidal sinus (the aperture). It does not always result in symptoms, and only when it becomes infected does it require treatment.

A pilonidal sinus is typically not noticed until it becomes infected and produces symptoms. A pus-filled abscess may form as well as discomfort and swelling brought on by an infection.

When is the pilonidal sinus uninfected?

If there are no indications of infection, treatment is not necessary. A "watch and wait" strategy will be advised. It's crucial to routinely take showers or bathe in order to maintain a clean environment between your buttocks. If your doctor doesn't recommend it, don't shave the afflicted region.

Treatment of Pilonidal Sinus

Pilonidal sinus infection is a painful condition that is caused by a bacterial infection in a hair follicle or a sweat gland at the base of the spine. There is a wide range of treatments for pilonidal sinus infections, including antibiotics, surgical treatments, and drainage of the abscess. Antibiotics are used to kill the bacteria that are causing the infection and can be used either as a pill or as an injection. Surgery can be performed to remove any abscesses that may be present, as well as any infected tissue in the area

What causes pilonidal sinus?

It is a medical condition characterised by cysts that form in the upper part of the cleft of the buttocks.

  • Though not much is known about the root causes, experts believe that the development of pilonidal sinus is associated with a person’s lifestyle, genetics, and hygiene.
  • In certain cases, it has been seen that frequent cycling and sitting for long hours on rough surfaces, obesity, and having a lot of body hair can increase the risk of developing pilonidal sinus.
  • Furthermore, genetics could also play a factor as it has been observed that some people may be more prone to developing these cysts.
  • Men tend to have more pilonidal sinuses because of their thicker hair.
  • Long durations of sitting can also raise your risk of developing a pilonidal sinus.
  • Surgical treatment
TYPE OF SURGERY OVERVIEW
1. Minor operation to drain pus from sinus - Incision and drainage To drain the pus, a tiny hole is cut in the abscess.
  • Depending on the extent of the abscess, a general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic may be used.
  • Regular (daily) changes of clothing
  • It takes 4 to 6 weeks to recuperate.
2. Operation to remove sinuses (wound left open) - Extensive removal and open healing Surgery to treat a big or recurrent sinus infection. A portion of the skin around the sinus is removed. An open wound is Allowed to naturally heal.
  • You can usually leave on the same day.
  • Regular (daily) changes of clothing
  • 6 to 12 weeks of recuperation time have the lowest chance of sinus recurrence
3. Operation to remove sinuses (wound closed) - Excision, wound healing, and frequently flattening of the buttocks groove
  • You can usually leave the same day
  • Compared to extensive excision and open healing, which has a faster recovery time, stitches are removed roughly 10 days following surgery.
  • They have a higher risk of infection (the wound may need to be opened and dressings changed regularly)
4. Laser Pilonidoplasty (LPP) Upon undergoing Laser Pilonidoplasty (LPP), the patient is released after 24 hours and is able to return to their usual job after 5 days.
  • Recovery is noticeably quicker.
  • Recurrence rates are quite low.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Pilonidal sinuses are not serious medical conditions before they become infected. Pilonidal sinuses that are infected require medical attention.

It is possible to get temporary relief from swelling and pus leakage, but the symptoms usually return within a short period of time. Pilonidal sinus infections do not resolve on their own most of the time.

A painful, tender, swollen, and red area will appear on the top of your buttocks. As pus may flow from the cyst when you sit down, you may experience additional pain. There is also hair on the pilonidal sinus.

During and after the surgery, you won't experience any pain thanks to local anaesthesia.
