What is constipation?

Constipation means that your bowel movements are difficult or occur less frequently than usual. At some point in their lives, almost everyone goes through it. Even if it isn't usually serious, you'll feel a lot better once your body is back on track. The average time between bowel movements differs from person to person. Some people consume them up to three times per day. Others only get them once or twice a week. However, going more than three days without one is usually excessive. After 3 days, passing your stool becomes increasingly difficult.

What are the symptoms?

  • Only a few bowel movements
  • Having difficulty passing a bowel movement
  • Stools that are hard or small
  • A feeling that not everything came out
  • Bloating in the stomach

You may also feel the need for assistance in emptying your bowels, such as pressing on your belly or using your finger to remove the stool from your bottom.

Things to do if you are constipated

  • Unless your doctor has told you to limit fluids for another reason, drink two to four extra glasses of water per day.
  • Warm liquids, particularly in the morning, are recommended.
  • Include more fruits and vegetables in your diet.
  • Consume prunes and bran cereal.
  • Most days of the week, you should exercise. When you move your body, the muscles in your intestines become more active as well.
  • Don't ignore the urge to poop.

When should I call my doctor?

If you have sudden constipation with abdominal pain or cramping and are unable to poop or pass gas, contact your doctor right away.

Also, decide if :

  • Constipation is a new problem for you, and changing your lifestyle hasn't helped.
  • There is blood in your stool.
  • You're losing weight despite your best efforts.
  • You are in a lot of pain when it comes to bowel movements.
  • Your constipation has been going on for more than two weeks.
  • Your stool's size, shape, and consistency have all changed dramatically

Constipation is usually a manageable condition, and only a small percentage of patients require medical or surgical intervention. At Healing Hands Clinic Mohali, treatment for constipation typically begins with conservative, non-surgical measures such as dietary modification with increased fiber intake, lifestyle changes, correction of toilet posture, use of prebiotics and probiotics, pelvic floor muscle training, regular exercise, adequate hydration, and stool softeners when required. In most individuals, these approaches are sufficient to relieve symptoms and restore normal bowel habits.

When constipation does not respond to conservative treatment, further evaluation is necessary to identify the underlying cause. Constipation is broadly classified into three main types: normal transit constipation, slow transit constipation, and constipation due to pelvic floor dysfunction. Surgical treatment is considered only in selected cases where constipation is caused by structural or anatomical abnormalities such as rectal prolapse, obstructed bowel outlet, chronic anal fissures, or rectocele.

One of the most common surgically treatable causes of chronic constipation is Obstructed Defecation Syndrome (ODS). In patients where ODS is associated with structural defects, the STARR (Stapled Transanal Rectal Resection) procedure has proven to be highly effective. This minimally invasive technique was developed by Dr. Antonio Longo, a globally renowned colorectal surgeon, and helps correct the anatomical obstruction responsible for difficulty in bowel evacuation. The STARR procedure significantly improves bowel movements, reduces straining, and enhances overall quality of life in appropriately selected patients.

Overall, constipation requires a cause-based and individualized treatment approach. Early diagnosis and specialist evaluation help prevent long-term complications and unnecessary surgery, ensuring safe, effective, and lasting relief.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

At Healing Hands Clinic Mohali, we first identify whether your constipation is functional or structural. Our treatment plan includes a fiber-rich diet, pelvic floor physiotherapy, patented plant-based medicines (like Constac / ConstacPlus), and biofeedback when needed. For structural causes such as Obstructed Defecation Syndrome (ODS), we also offer advanced surgical options such as STARR.

If you have fewer than three bowel movements per week, suffer from hard stools, bleeding, straining frequently, or persistent abdominal discomfort, consult our specialists. At our Mohali center, we use thorough diagnostics to determine the exact cause and tailor treatment.

Many patients with functional or mild constipation respond well to non-surgical therapies: plant-based medicines, diet & lifestyle modifications, physiotherapy, and biofeedback. These interventions often restore normal bowel function without the need for surgery.

For structural or refractory cases, Healing Hands Clinic Mohali offers surgeries such as STARR (Stapled Trans-Anal Rectal Resection) and other corrective procedures designed to relieve obstruction and restore normal bowel dynamics.

Our experts employ diagnostic techniques including MRI Defecography, Anorectal Manometry, and imaging studies to distinguish between functional problems (e.g. pelvic floor dysfunction) and structural anomalies (e.g. rectocele or prolapse). This ensures precise, individualized treatment.

Many diagnostic and treatment procedures, including surgeries, are accepted under health insurance plans. Our Mohali team assists with cashless hospitalization and documentation to make the process easier.

At Healing Hands Clinic Mohali, treatment costs depend on the severity and type of care required:

Medical treatment : ₹2,000 – ₹4,000 (includes our patented, plant-based medicines and therapies)

Surgical treatment (for complex cases like ODS) : ₹1,00,000 – ₹1,50,000

This generally includes :

  • Doctor & surgeon’s fees
  • Operation theatre & anesthesia charges (if applicable)
  • Hospital stay (if required)

An exact estimate is provided after consultation with our Proctology Expert. We also offer cashless insurance and EMI options for eligible patients.
