What does a pilonidal sinus look like?

Pilonidal sinus can look like :

  • An abscess known as a pilonidal, in which the hair follicle becomes infected and pus gathers in the fat tissue.
  • If there has been an abscess for a prolonged period, a pilonidal cyst, a cyst or hole, may occur.
  • A pilonidal sinus, when a tube emerges from the hair follicle deeper or under the skin.
  • A tiny pore or pit on the skin that has hair or dark patches in it

Causes of Pilonidal Sinus

It is unclear what causes pilonidal illness. It is believed to be brought on by hair in the crease between the buttocks growing into the skin.

This issue is more likely to affect those who :

  • Are overweight
  • Experiencing pain or discomfort there
  • Possess an abundance of body hair, especially coarse, curly hair

Symptoms Of Pilonidal sinus

  • Recurring episodes of pain or swelling in the area of the tailbone.
  • Yellowish pus-like or bloody discharge from the tailbone area which may be foul smelling
  • Painful lump under the skin in that area
  • Certain activities like riding a bicycle, doing sit-ups may be very uncomfortable.
  • Fever

Surgical Procedure

1. Minor operation to drain pus from sinus - Incision and drainage
  • Depending on the extent of the abscess, a general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic may be used.
  • Regular (daily) changes of clothing
  • It takes 4 to 6 weeks to recuperate
2. Operation to remove sinuses (wound left open) - Extensive removal and open healing
  • Hospital stays under general anaesthesia (you can usually leave the same day).
  • Regular (daily) changes of clothing
  • 6 to 12 weeks of recuperation time have the lowest chance of sinus recurrence.
3. Operation to remove sinuses (wound closed) - Excision, wound healing, and frequently flattening of the buttocks groove
  • Hospital stays under general anaesthesia (you can usually leave the same day)
  • Compared to extensive excision and open healing, which have a faster recovery time, stitches are removed roughly 10 days following surgery.
  • They have a higher risk of infection (the wound may need to be opened and dressings changed regularly)
4. Laser Pilonidoplasty (LPP)
  • Since a wide excision typically requires 6 to 8 weeks for wound healing,
  • Recovery is noticeably quicker.
  • Recurrence rates are quite low.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Pilonidal sinuses are not a severe medical issue before they become infected. Pilonidal sinus infections necessitate medical attention.

Although swelling and fluid leaking may be momentarily stopped, the symptoms usually return soon. Pilonidal sinus infections frequently do not go away on their own.

A painful, sensitive, swollen, and red area will form on the top of your buttocks. When you sit down, the pain may increase because the cyst may begin to flow pus. Additionally coated in hair is the pilonidal sinus.

The discomfort felt after pilonidal sinus surgery is typically less than after other procedures, such as those used to cure fistulas and fissures. The local anaesthetic used during the treatment will ensure that you don't experience any pain during or after it.
