What is Laparoscopic surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery, also known as Minimally Invasive Surgery, as the name suggests is a specialized surgical process, which involves use of camera and small and thin surgical tools for performing the surgery. The camera is used as an aid for visualizing the internal organs of the body without the need to make large cuts. The camera is inserted in the body through a small incision ( half an inch ), and then with the help of digital display on the monitor, the surgeon carries out the entire surgical process. First, through the incision, a tube called as port is inserted, and then camera or laparoscope and tools are introduced through the tube for performing the surgery. However, in some cases, due to certain complications such as internal swelling, which prevents inserting of laparoscope, the laparoscopic surgery technique cannot be used.

Conventionally, in open surgeries, a large cut was made in the body through which surgeons will have to insert their hands and perform the surgery. This process was more complicated for surgeries involving internal organs such as liver or pancreas. Due to the large cuts, not only did the time of recovery increased, but the risks associated were equally high. Patients suffered more pain and scars mark were large in conventional surgery techniques. Laparoscopic surgery is helpful in most of the intestinal surgeries, such as ulcerative colitis, severe constipation, diverticulitis, rectal prolapse and cancer.
